Although there are a variety of plants that repel rodents I had to research the top 8 amongst others that are capable of repelling rodents and insects effectively.
The plants I have mentioned in this article are a result of my experience with them and the research conducted on them by I and the team on these plants.
Stay with me now as I mention these plants. Some you know, some you never expected!
What are the 8 Plants that Repel Rodents?
- Lavender:
Lavender is a beautiful plant with its purple coloration and wonderful scent. Despite its pleasant scent and amazing coloration, it tops my list of plants that repel rodents.
If your home is suffering from rodent infestation, rats, rodents, etc. you can grow this beautiful plant in the garden of your home to have it in constant supply, and then you can spread it in your home.
Below are steps on how to apply the lavender:
- Purchase lavender essential oil from Amazon
- Spray the oil around your home
If you carefully follow the above steps, then you are sure to keep these rodents at bay.
2. Mint:
Mints make it second on my list of top plants that repel rodents. The strong smell that emanates from this plant is capable of keeping rodents and even insects off your property.
It’s not just the mint itself that keeps the rodents away, but the compounds that are contained in the mint greatly contribute to this repelling power. Rodents will definitely not thrive in your home if this plant is present.
The powerful scent of mint is capable of covering a wide distance and repels rodents by creating a barrier.
Below are steps to properly apply the mint and repel rodents:
- Soak cotton balls in peppermint essential oils
- Place these soaked cotton balls in rodent hot spots.
Alternatively,
- Mix 3 spoons of peppermint essential oils in water.
- Pour this mixture into a spray bottle.
- Spray the mixture in hot spots where these rodents are frequently seen.

3. Chrysanthemums:
This one makes it on the list as the third plant that repels rodents. What makes this plant an effective repellent, as it has been seen to be, is the high pyrethrin content that it contains.
It is capable of altering the nervous system of rats, and this makes them avoid it at all costs. An effective rodent repellent, I must say.
If you want to get a chrysanthemum, then you should look out for the yellow center of the plant; this is the part of the plant with the most pyrethrin content.
To ensure the healthiness of this plant, you should provide it with the following:
- Regular watering.
- Soil that drains easily.
- Sunlight availability.
With these in place, your plant is sure to bloom properly. You can then repel these rodents to your heart’s content.
4. Daffodils:
This one has to be number 4 on my list of plants that repel rodents because of the peasant yet repelling scent that emanates from this floral plant.
If you have pets in your home, I would not advise that you get this plant because of its poison components:
- Lycorine
- Alkaloids
If rodents or any small animal (including your pets) consume this plant, they are sure to suffer from the following symptoms:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Salivation, etc
It may be a very active repellent against rodents, but it is not recommended if you have pets.
5. Marigolds:
Marigold is another toxic plant that repels rodents, which is why it makes it number 5 on the list of plants that repel rodents. What gives this plant its toxic-repelling abilities is the alpha-terthienyl compound that it contains.
I would greatly recommend that you surround your gardens and structure with marigolds as this plant is very effective in repelling rodents.
If you are also looking for plants that repel rodents and insects, then the marigold is your go-to option as its repelling abilities cut through even to the insect world.
Since insect pests are mostly attracted to tomatoes and other food crops in your gardens, I recommend that you plant marigolds along with these food crops to keep these pests away.
6. Catnips:
This one works beautifully well and attracts cats while also deterring rodents. Unlike the daffodil that I previously mentioned, this plant is able to repel rodents while being safe for your pets.
What makes the catnip a good repellent? It is the nepetalactone that it contains.
If you are trying to repel rodents, then you can easily spray catnip oil around the plants. Yes, it is safe.
Using the catnip is more like killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Here is why I said so:
- It repels rodents.
- It attracts the enemies of rodents: cats!
Using this repellent will definitely reduce the population of rodents on your property. You can purchase this repellent from Amazon.

7. Garlics:
It is somewhat impossible to mention plants that repel rodents without mentioning garlic. Garlic is a good repellent and will deter rodents effectively.
Rodents greatly detest the awful smell that emanates from this plant and hence, they will try to avoid it in every possible way.
I basically use this simple repellent to deter rodents in my home. Below is how I go about it:
- I chop the garlic cloves.
- I scatter them all around my garden soil.
If you also have plants that are prone to be attacked by rodents, I recommend that you grow garlic close to these plants.
8. Lemongrass:
While I was researching plants that repel rodents and insects, the lemongrass popped up, and definitely, I had to include it on my list of plants that repel rodents.
While repelling insects such as mosquitoes, gnats, etc. it also repels rodents such as rats, mice, etc. Lemongrass has a lot of benefits which is why it was necessary I add it to this list.
