What are the Types of Termite Barriers for Existing Homes?

  • Physical Barriers:

You will usually apply these termite barriers around the perimeter of your house. They are usually made of the following materials:

    • Plastic
    • Mesh
    • Metal
  • Chemical Barriers:

We know that a chemical is a unique form of matter with a constant chemical composition and characteristic properties.

As a barrier type, it is usually applied to the soil surrounding the house, to prevent termites from gaining access.

  • Baiting System:

This is another type of termite barriers for existing homes and usually involves the installation of termite baits around the house in specific places where these termites are likely to see them.

How Do Termite Barriers for Existing Homes Work?

  • Physical Barriers:

I like to refer to this barrier as a ‘set up’ barrier type, and I’ll tell you why. This barrier creates a kind of obstruction that prevents the termites from gaining access to your house.

Now, because they cannot access your home directly, they build mud tubes around this barrier. They may gain access, but they have also given out their presence and hideout in the process as well, and it is easy to eliminate them now.

  • Chemical Barriers:

A chemical barrier involves applying chemicals around your home to prevent termites from passing through.

The amusing thing about this barrier type is that it is non-repellent, meaning that the termites are not even aware that it is there. They won’t even see what is coming.

  • Baiting Systems:

The bait system barrier type, on the other hand, works by luring the termites to itself and contains chemicals that are dangerously toxic to the termites.

The bait system does not kill the termites immediately but keeps them alive long enough to take the baits back to their nest, where it eliminates the rest of the colony.
