What is the Dumpster Dog Book About?

Dumpster Dog is his name. He sleeps outdoors, walks by himself and eats what he likes, whenever he pleases. But Dumpster Dog still needs a companion.

Dumpster Dog begins his search for a companion. He will learn, however, that finding the right owner is not as simple as it seems and that life can be dangerous.

This first book in a French chapter-book collection features a homeless dog on a quest to find its owner.

Dumpster Dog smells, looks like a rug and doesn’t know left from right. Although this pup is of an indeterminate breed, he does have a good heart. Flat Cat is a cat that was flattened by being run over as a kitten.

He shares a garbage can with Flat Cat. Flat Cat, when Dumpster Dog expresses a desire for an owner (alongside a bicycle to “re-inflate”) his feline friend, encourages him to find one.

Misadventure is this dog’s constant companion, just like his flies fan club. When Dumpster Dog finally finds his owner, he is taken to the butcher and made into sausage.

He, fortunately, isn’t that appealing. The text does not mention that the poodles and bassets will be eaten by someone.

He is able to escape only to run into a trio of greedy kidnappers who are stealing and burgling. Can he however save his day? Will Flat Cat ever be reinflated and can Dumpster Dog save the day?

What is the Review of the Book By Top Personalities?

  • Jenny Rosenstrach, The New York Times:

“This chapter book—already popular in France, where it has been made into a hit TV show—is for kids who can appreciate a little more action and a lot more voice in their reading. (There’s more than a hint of Lemony Snicket’s dark hilarity in Gutman’s writing.)”

  • The Midwest Book Review:

“Entertaining and unreservedly recommended.”

  • Katrina Yurenka, Youth Services Book Review:

The coloured illustrations are cute, charming and very expressive.  Dumpster Dog and his story come completely to life.”
