What is Bifenthrin Insecticide?

How To Use Bifenthrin Insecticide

Bifenthrin first registered by the US EPA in 1985 is a pyrethroids insecticide used to control over 70 different pests.

Pyrethroids are an artificial class of insecticide made to mimic the pyrethrins found in chrysanthemum flowers. Bifenthrin is synthesized in various forms but is not limited to powders, granules, and liquids.

Insecticides known as pyrethroids include bifenthrin. Because it has an effect on the neurological system of the ant, it is commonly used to combat ant infestations, notably those caused by the invasive red fire ant.

It possesses a high toxicity level and is harmful to aquatic species. It is not a chemical that is banned for use in the United States, and it is available for purchase at low concentrations for use in homes.

Uses of Bifenthrin Insecticides

Do you know how to use bifenthrin insecticide? Bifenthrin insecticides are used indoors and outdoors to control many pests like:

  • Ants
  • Termites
  • Cockroaches
  • Ticks
  • Mole crickets
  • Stink bugs
  • Armyworms, and many other invasive turf ornamental pests as well.

How Does Bifenthrin Insecticide Work?

Bifenthrin is a pyrethroid so its mode of action works by contact or ingestion. This ingredient interferes with a pest’s central nervous flicking paralysis and knocks the pest down.

This paralysis creates an inability to function or eat which eventually leads to the pest’s death. It can take between minutes to several hours for a pest to die.

When allowed to dry on a surface, bifenthrin will leave a long-lasting residual that will continue to control pests for a duration typically several months.

Bifenthrin has a repelling effect but insects that make contact with the treated areas, while the residual is active will be affected.
