What Is the History of Cook’s Pest Control, Inc.?

John L. Cook started the business in 1928 as a termite control company and named it after himself. Since time, the company has expanded to become one of the most successful and well-known providers of pest management services throughout the southeastern United States. It now has locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

The company received the Better Business Bureau’s National Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics in the year 2001. This honor was given to only Cook’s and one other company that provides pest control services.

North Alabama Termite Company was one of the first companies in the Southeast that specialized in termite management when it was established in 1928 by John Lewis Cook.

The family was originally from Athens, which is located in Limestone County. Cook developed many of his tools and methods because there were no established norms or guidelines for him to adhere to during that period.

Cook provided contracts to his clients that ensured ongoing maintenance and treatments over a predetermined amount of time, so establishing a system that is still in use today is a norm.

After taking over the family firm in 1950, John R. Cook, son of John L. Cook, continued the same service model that his father had established. After receiving his diploma from high school in 1943, John R. Cook immediately enlisted in the United States Navy.

After he was discharged from the military, he attended the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta to study architecture. John L. Cook passed away in 1950, three months before his son graduated from high school.

The younger Cook decided to move back to Alabama with his wife Jo to assume management of the family business, which already provided termite treatments, and to broaden the scope of the company to include more pest control services.

In 1952, the company decided to add “Cook’s Pest Control” to its name to more accurately reflect its expanded line of work. At the same time, the North Alabama Termite Company name began to be retired over time.

Cook achieved a great deal of notoriety as a result of his creative and memorable advertising efforts. Cookie the Cop, the character who serves as the company’s mascot, is well-known across the Southeast.

The host of a popular children’s television show that was broadcast by a local Huntsville station and sponsored by Cook’s served as the inspiration for the character.

A graphic artist from Birmingham came up with the idea for the company’s mascot and logo, both of which are still in use today. Another well-known marketing tagline that is associated with the brand is the melody for their advertisements that goes “Lookie lookie lookie, here comes Cookie.”

John and Jo transformed a song from an older movie into a memorable jingle in the 1960s by making certain modifications to it. The jingle underwent some more development at the hands of an advertising agency based in Nashville, and it continues to play an important role in the marketing efforts of the corporation even in the present day.

Cook also engaged the company in several other remarkable advertising initiatives. These campaigns included the use of vintage vehicles to advertise the business, the holding of raffles at county fairs and festivals, and participation in parades with staff costumed as Keystone Cops.

Additionally, Cook was responsible for the implementation of a variety of technological advancements in the pest control industry. In 1959, he was the first person in the company’s history to put two-way radios in the company’s vehicles so that employees could communicate more efficiently with the corporate headquarters.

In 1968, Cook’s headquarters office in Decatur became the first location to implement computerized administration. Cook collaborated with a wide variety of businesses throughout his career to create innovative tools and approaches for the management of pests.

Together with General Motors Corporation, the pest control company Cook’s Pest Control was able to successfully design a specialized model of the Chevrolet Colorado pick-up truck that would be used by the company’s technicians.

Cook also placed a strong emphasis on the need for training for his personnel and amassed a sizeable collection of entomological specimens specifically for use in the training program he had developed for his workforce.

After some time had passed, these items were used to construct what is now known as the Cook Museum of Natural Science in Decatur. Cook’s approach to running his business placed a premium on providing high-quality service rather than offering bargain basement prices.

John Cook encouraged others in the industry of professional pest control to adopt the same type of commercial operation as his company. Throughout his career, he was a member of both the National Pest Management Association and the Alabama Pest Control Association, where he was both active and respected in his roles.

After a long and courageous struggle against cancer, John R. Cook passed away in 2009. At the moment, John Cook Jr. is acting in the capacity of chairman of the board of directors. In 2017, his son Brian Cook was promoted to the position of president and CEO of the company.

Today, Cook’s has around 36 locations throughout six states in the Southeastern United States, and it has 1,750 full-time employees.

The company’s sales in 2016 totaled $152 million, placing it as the fifth-largest pest and termite treatment company in the United States. The Cook family continues to hold ownership of Cook’s Pest Control to this day.
