Are you one of the many people who are not strangers to lip biting and you ask why people lip bite after dental anesthesia treatment?
Lip biting after dental anesthesia is a common problem that dentists face, especially with young children. Many studies have reported lip biting after dental treatment with local anesthesia.
In the literature, there has been little discussion of this injury. This case report can be used by the next generation of dental professionals to treat young children.
If lip biting is to be prevented, it can be done by assessing the risk and taking preventative measures. If it occurs, it must be treated with appropriate palliative treatment.
This case report describes a child who bit his lips after receiving topical anesthesia for a dental procedure. Read on for more information!
We may use local anesthesia to numb the tooth (or teeth) so that your child is pain-free throughout treatment. The numbness may last for several hours, depending on the type and duration of the local anesthesia.
Why do people lip bite after dental anesthesia treatment? A child may not be able to tell if they’re biting their lips, picking their tongue, or scratching their inside cheeks. This is a sensation they may have never experienced before.
Lip bites can cause swelling, bruising, or ulcers and are often mistaken for an allergy or infection. They usually heal within a few days ( if antibiotics are not used), but it can take up to one week.
OraVerse is available at Smiles for Kids Pediatric Dentistry. It helps to reduce the time that the patient spends numb.
It can be difficult for parents to know what their children are doing when they wear masks, especially during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Please remind your children not to chew or bite on their lips while they feel numb. Here’s what to do if your child bites themselves accidentally:
- For the first three days, apply ice packs. Ice packs are to be applied for 15 minutes, then 15 minutes, every hour for an hour.
- For pain, give your child Tylenol (as per the manufacturer’s instructions) or Motrin over the counter.
- Maintain good oral hygiene and keep the area clean.
- Avoid foods that may irritate your stomach, such as citrus juices and tomato-based food.
- You can rinse with saltwater twice a day, for three days.
- Use topical numbing creams (as per the instructions on the label) but be cautious that the child does not traumatize the area again by applying more numbing.

What to Look Out for after your Child has had Dental Treatment
Why do people lip bite after dental anesthesia treatment? Lip biting is a common complication, particularly for children, of any dental procedure involving local anesthesia.
It is hard for children to tell if they’re biting the inside of their cheek or their lip after their mouths have been numbed.
This complication is more common during the COVID-19 epidemic, as many children wear face masks to and from the dental office. It’s much harder for parents to tell if their child has bit their lip or the inside of their cheek.
It is very important for both the child and the caregiver to understand that after a dental procedure that involves anesthetic, the children should be extremely careful to not accidentally bite their lips or cheeks.
This will last between 2-3 hours or until the numbness has gone away. During this time, no food or drinks should be consumed.
It is best to stay in a place where a mask is not required. This allows parents to better monitor their child’s oral health.
When your child bites or chews on his or her lip or cheek a yellowish-looking traumatic ulcer can form. It may take two weeks for the ulcer to heal.
During this period, you should keep the area clean and maintain your normal oral hygiene by brushing and flossing.
Avoid foods that could irritate the skin, such as tomato-based food or citrus juices. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be given to your child if they are in pain.
Why do people lip bite after dental anesthesia treatment? Anesthetic is used in some dental procedures to help reduce the pain your child feels.
Your child may feel a tingling in their mouth, tongue, or cheeks as the anesthetic wears away, usually over 1-2 hours. Watch your child to make sure he doesn’t bite, chew or scratch the numbed area.
You should avoid giving your child solid foods until the numbness subsides. Soft snacks like Jell-o or frozen yoghurt are good choices. Also, milkshakes, smoothies, and/or milkshakes.
You should spoon your snacks rather than using a straw. Avoid acidic foods and drinks such as tomato-based foods, sauces, and citric juices when there is an open wound.
Your child may experience swelling on his or her lip, cheek, or tongue. This can last up to five full days. This usually occurs in children under 8 years old.
This can look like a yellowish-white plaque or a large traumatic wound. This is part of the normal healing process. The lesion will heal within 10-14 days.
You can give your child Tylenol(r) or ibuprofen (Motrin(r)) for pain and apply Orabase over the swollen areas. Orabase can be applied to the affected areas after giving your child Tylenol (r) or Motrin (r) children’s pain relievers.
