Interesting Sports That You Can Enjoy With Your Pet

Sport is fun on its own, and pets are fun on their own! But what about combining them for an extra big dose of fun? The list of interesting sports that you can enjoy with your pet is endless if you get creative!

We’ve listed a few of our favorite ideas for fun sports to play with your pet in tow (or sometimes, for your pet to play with their human in tow!). Some you don’t need any fancy gadgets, some you need a bit of equipment, but it’s worth it!

Interesting Sports That You Can Enjoy With Your Pet

Whether you have a dog, a cat, a rabbit, or a horse, there’s a sport on this list for you! In the end, it’s all about having fun with your pet, giving them a bit of a challenge, and bonding, so you can even play your own sports at home if these aren’t suitable. Have fun!

1. Disc Dog

If you love playing Frisbee with your dog, this is the sport for you! There are 2 different event types that you can participate in with your dog.

One is distance catching, which has the human throwing as many discs as they can as far as they can, and the dogs being scored on the quality of their catches. Two, freestyle catching, which is a choreographed throw-and-catch that has your dog doing some tricks and being scored on their agility and catching skills.

Both are fun, although one might be more appropriate for your dog than the other. One of the great things about this sport is that it has dog and owner working very closely together and is a great way to bond.

2. Skijoring

This is a sport for dog owners and their dogs who live in snowy places. It’s a winter sport that involves your pup pulling you through the snow on skis or a sled.

You can do skijoring with a single dog if they’re strong enough, or with up to three dogs at a time. It’s ideal if you have more than one active dog who loves to run!

Even smaller dogs can take part in this event, as it’s primarily downhill so they won’t need to pull the entire weight of the skier. However, you should make sure your dog is both strong enough and has the stamina for the sport!

3. Cat Agility Training

Yes, cats can do agility training as well as dogs! If you’re looking for a sport that will challenge your cat and help the two of you bond, this could be it.

The cat owners lead their cats through an obstacle course similar to that on dog agility courses. Cats are extremely fast, so keep up! They’re scored on their agility and accuracy.

4. Reining

If you’re a horse owner, reining could be the best sport to bond with your horse. It’s not as technical as dressage or as dangerous as polo, so it’s ideal for both horses and owners who are new to the sport.

It involves the rider and the horse working together to complete a series of movements. They’re judged on smoothness, speed, finesse, and your and your horse’s attitude.

5. Treibball

Interesting Sports That You Can Enjoy With Your Pet

Energetic dogs will enjoy this sport, especially those with herding instincts! Each dog must gather up 8 large balls and herd them down a field towards a set of goalposts. All 8 need to be in the goal within a certain time period!

This is an excellent choice for sheepdogs and other similar types, but keep in mind that the dog owner plays very little part in the sport, except for voice commands and signals.

6. Kaninhoppning Kaninhoppning

Not everyone has a cat or dog. If you’re a rabbit parent, this sport is for you! Rabbit jumping is similar to a showjumping course, with your rabbit having to jump over obstacles in a certain time period to complete the course.

They gain points and can progress from one difficulty level to another, so there’s plenty of room for improvement in this sport! The rabbits need to be harnessed and leashed, so training your bunny well before attempting competition is recommended.

Conclusion

There’s a huge variety of interesting sports that you can enjoy with your pet, no matter what kind of animal they are! Just remember, it’s about having fun and bonding… It’s not always about winning. Don’t forget your sunscreen!
