So proper identification and inspection are important. Outdoor roaches such as American brown-banded, Oriental, and Smoky brown roaches tend to be larger than indoor roaches.

Common outdoor roach species are large, the American roaches being the largest and 1.5 inches in length. Indoor roaches like German roaches are easier to differentiate as they are much smaller growing only up to half an inch in length.

Where to Inspect: The German cockroaches are typically found inside of structures, clustered around heat sources, like electronics or kitchen appliances.

When they are inactive during today, outdoor roaches typically live outdoors and hide underneath lumber piles, rocks, or any other debris that can provide shelter.

However, outdoor roaches will find their way inside structures and search for food, water, and shelter. Once inside, they will harbor in attics, garages, basements, kitchens, and bathrooms.

When inspecting for outdoor roach activity. Take note of any possible entry points like:

  • Cracks
  • Openings
  • Doors
  • Broken window
  • Screens
  • Voids and
  • Walls.

Inspect the structure’s interior perimeter for cracks and crevices that roaches could crawl through. Examine door and window sills to make sure they close properly. You will treat these areas to prevent roaches from coming inside.

How to Keep Outside Roaches Away

To control an outdoor roach infestation.

Use an insecticide like Reclaim IT and mix it with an insect growth regulator like Martin’s IG Regulator and insecticidal work to kill roaches while an insect growth regulator or IGR will prevent their life cycle.

It will also prevent premature roaches from developing into adults, and stopping eggs from hatching.

To Apply Reclaim IT: You can use a rate of 0.33 ounces to 1 ounce of product per 1 gallon of water.

To Apply Martins IG Regulator: Use a rate of 2 ounces of product per 1-gallon dissolution of Martin’s IG Regulator.

  • 1 gallon of water will cover 1,000 square feet of the treatment area. Fill a pump sprayer with half a gallon of water and add Reclaim IT and Martin’s IG Regulator.
  • Close the sprayer and agitate the solution to ensure equal distribution. Open it and add the remaining water to the pump sprayers (1 gallon).
  • Fill the line and agitate the solution again and you’re now ready to start.

Where to Spray: Apply both the Reclaim IT and Martin’s IGR solution as a perimeter treatment around your structure’s foundation and fence perimeter.

  • Create a barrier by spraying the solutions 3 feet up the structure and 3 feet out.
  • Next, treat the entry points you notice earlier during your inspection. Ensure to spray around doors, windows, openings created by utility pipes, the garage door, and any other openings you may have found.
  • Once an adult roach comes into contact with the chemical solution. It can take up to an hour for it to die.
  • Premature roaches will die over time as the IGR prevents them from growing into adults and reproducing.
  • Once you have treated your structures and perimeter layout, you can use insecticide bait like Ficam.
  • Ficam is a granular insecticide that is ready to use and requires no mixing. To spread Ficam use a rate of 2 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet of the treatment area.
  • For more simply apply 3.2 to 6 ounces per 100 square feet. To spray, open the container and remove the seal, hold the container about four to five inches above the ground and shake the product out at 2 to 4-foot bands around your treatment perimeter.
  • Focus your treatment around the entry points you noted earlier, use a duster to apply Ficam in tight spaces.
  • Use a handheld spreader to apply Ficam around bushes, shrubs, and trees.
